Since 1922, the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) has embodied the attributes of our founders: love, courage, and honor. Membership is by invitation to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, and to nurse leaders exhibiting exceptional achievements in nursing. Through Sigma’s commitment to professional development numerous educational offerings and products serve to advance learning to improve world-wide health. In 1936, Sigma was the first organization in the United States to fund nursing research. Sigma is recognized for its support of scholarship, excellence in nursing practice and funding opportunities in nursing research. Currently, there are 540 chapters at more than 700 institutions of higher education. Sigma has more than 135,000 active members who reside in more than 100 countries.
